RADICAL AWAKENING

Queer culture in Sydney is heavily reliant on bars and night clubs, specifically focused on Oxford Street located on the outskirts of Sydney’s business district. However, how many people actively enjoy clubbing and bar hopping on a day-to-day basis?

Radical Awakening is a space which explores the complexities of queer culture in Sydney, through reimagining the White Bay Power Station as a civic centre, which is exclusive to queer identities. This civic centre challenges the current social norms of the queer community, creating a space which caters to those who strive for authentic connections and meaningful encounters, through an emphasis on queer and indigenous permanence.

Radical Awakening was developed through conversational based research and experiencing and learning of country firsthand. The civic centre consists of 5 spaces, a POC ballroom, museum, arcade and games rooms, bookstore and rooftop restaurant. Each space encompasses an element of queer history, political activism and connection to country.
